Dolphins in myths

Dolphins appear in many Greek myths and legends as the helpers of people. They played an important role in Minoan culture. The images of dolphins were found on the walls of destroyed palace.
The poet Arion was saved by the dolphin. The maritime creature delivered the poet to his home. There is a temple in the city of Arion, where the images of Arion riding the dolphin can be seen.
According to one of myths of Ancient Greece, the boy died in the water but was raised from the dead by Poseidon. And this boy was turned into the dolphin.
According to Italian legends, the water god was travelling riding the dolphin.

According to the ancient myth, pirates kidnapped Dionysus thinking he was a rich prince. When the ship got to the high waters, Dionysus showed his powers of the god covering the whole ship with vines, he turned oars into snakes and sailors got frightened and jumped into the water. Dionysus felt sorry for them and turned them into dolphins, so that they could help other people if they need help.
